Mental Health Tips

Just because you get older doesn’t mean that you get dumber, because intelligence does not decline with age as you may believe. One thing that does slow down as you age is your reaction speed; we all know the rumors about the elderly drivers. However other mental abilities increase with age such as:

  • Accuracy
  • Knowledge
  • Wisdom

In human development, some of the keys to reaching old age are to find ways to understand and use the lesson’s that one encounter in their lifetime, and pass it on to as many people as possible. This means to learn one’s own strength and weaknesses and to adopt and evolve from the loss that was encountered. So, people must continue to adopt to stay fit both mentally and physically.

Failure to do so can result in a decline in physical and mental health at any age. A nicely done study from Seattle stated that they saw a wide variation of changes in people as they age, and the good news is that a large number of them so little decline even as they age. So what were the secrets? Well nothing really, it’s the same stuff your parents probably been telling you from day one which is to:

  • Exercise instead of hanging around the house.
  • Get involved in activities or clubs.
  • Study hard so you can get a good education and become successful.
  • Have a nice attitude so that it would be a pleasant for other people to hang around you.

So basically, if you exercise regularly, be involved in lots of activities, be somewhat fruitful (don’t have to be rich), and have a flexible attitude than you can help preserve your mental strength as you age. However, be aware of some of the emotional changes that come along with aging.

Some of the rules in the authority figure in a marriage will begin to reverse. Basically, the man who was the assertive one and made most of the decisions flips as they age, and the women becomes the more assertive, while the man takes on the nurturing role.

This usually occurs in the mid fifties range so women you have to be a little patient for now. Don’t worry fellows, you are not alone, this happens in several of cultures around the world.

Believe it or not, developing a nurturing role can have some good benefits on your health. By practicing this technique one can help to prevent and alleviate stress, heart complications like coronary heart disease, and shortened life expectancy which can be aggravated by work and frequent “retirement shock.”
